 In March 1997 Anette and Bill took a 3 night cruise aboard the Derwani Dream cruise boat (which has since ceased operations). The trip went from Jakarta to Lampung on the southern coast of Sumatra. On the way back we passed Krakatau volcano (see photos from a March 2003 trip to Krakatau here) as the sun was setting. On our final day we stopped at one of the 1000 islands just north of Jakarta. The cruise boat wasn't very luxurious and the food was mediocre at best (this may partially explain why its not operating any longer), however, we still enjoyed the trip as it was an opportunity to get out of the city.
In Sumatra we did a city tour which included a visit to a Buddhist temple and a local village where they made the local textiles. On the following evening we passed Krakatau Volcano as the sun set. The next day we stopped at one of the 1000 islands north of Jakarta for some fun at the beach before returning to Jakarta. Overall a fun trip. Unfortunately we didn't take any still photos from this trip but you can see a short video (9 minutes/10 megabytes) of our visit in Lampung and passing Krakatau at sunset below.
