May 1998 - Jakarta Evacuation to Singapore/Sweden

In May 1998 we needed to evacuate Jakarta because of civil unrest.  We initially evacuated to Singapore with basically the clothes on our back.  In hindsight the evacuation was probably unnecessary but at the time there was a lot of uncertainty over how bad things would get.  And once evacuated there was much speculation over when it would be okay to return.  After spending the first couple of days in Singapore it was determined we would be out of Jakarta for at least 2 weeks at which time we decided to visit Anette's family in Sweden.  Below is a photos slideshow from this trip.  In addition you can view a short video clip of this trip here (5 minutes/5 megabytes).

In addition, if you are interested you can view a short video compilation (9 minutes/9.7 megabytes) of the Jakarta riots along with some of the aftermath damage here.
