In February 2002 Bill and two colleagues (Sacha and Doug) made a long weekend trip to Bali for a few rounds of golf. This was a farewell trip for Doug before his repatriation to the USA. Our first stop was the Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club which is located up in the mountains. We stayed our first night in one of the bungalows at the country club. The bungalows were basic and comfortable but nothing fancy. The food in the restaurant was edible but I wouldn't classify it as gourmet. As for the golf course it was very lush and well manicured. The views of the volcano were spectacular. A few weeks before our arrival the area had experienced a storm so there were some fallen trees and several holes that had experienced flooding with associated damage to the fairways. Although a challenging course it didn't prove too difficult for us hackers.
Our next stop was the Le Meridien Bali / Nirwana Bali Golf Club. This was the first time any of us had played this golf course and no one was complaining. The course was meticulously manicured and the female caddies were very professional and helpful. This golf course can be challenging for the errant golfer as there are many areas to get into trouble. Three of the holes have panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the waves breaking up against the cliffs. Hole #7 is by far the most picturesque golf course hole that I have ever played. This hole is a par 3 with the tee box up on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean with the green sitting 214 yards on another cliff with waves breaking up in between. In the background is the Tanah Lot Temple. A truly enjoyable round of golf. We stayed at the Le Meridien which was very comfortable hotel with much better food than we had at the Bali Handara. Overall an enjoyable weekend.
