March 2003 - Weekend Trip to Krakatau Volcano

In March 2003 Anette and I were fortunate to be invited to join Larry (Bill's colleague) and Istini (Larry's wife) aboard the luxurious "Maloekoe" yacht for a weekend to West Java/Krakatau Volcano.  This yacht belongs to the owner of the company that Istini works for and we are thankful to have had the opportunity to experience this vessel.  The yacht was built by Trinity Yachts (http://www.trinityyachts.com) in New Orleans.  The "Maloekoe" inspired another yacht built by Trinity Yachts called "Whale Song" which was reviewed in the "Power and Motoryacht" magazine.

We departed Jakarta Friday evening and arrived at Krakatau early Saturday morning.  Krakatau volcano experienced a colossal eruption on August 26, 1883.  You can read the history of this event which changed the world weather patterns for the next few years here.  We climbed up the volcano approximately two-thirds of the way to the summit.  The outer edges of the island have dense vegetation but this quickly turns to black volcano rocks which you can see in the photo to the right.  Next trip we hope to make it all the way to the summit.

In addition to climbing the volcano Larry and I got a few dives in around the island.  The underwater topography was quite interested as it consisted of big boulders from the volcano.  On Saturday evening we enjoyed a nice dinner on the aft deck admiring the stars.  We returned to Jakarta Sunday evening.  A truly good weekend.
