In February 2005 a colleague and I went to Dhaka Bangladesh for a work assignment. This was only a two day trip so we didn't really have time to do any real sightseeing, however, we did get to see the city life on our way to and from the hotel to the office. Below are a few pictures which I took on my handphone (so the quality isn't that good) during this short trip. It goes without saying that this is a very poor country with lacking infrastructure. The few people we came into contact with during this trip were very friendly and helpful so despite their economic hardships it appeared that people kept a positive attitude. The highlight of the trip was on our last night in town we went to the shops where they sell nautical souvenirs which are salvaged from ships that are beached. The government actually encourages this practice as it creates employment for people to dismantle the ships. The shops had brass bells, navigation equipment and other nautical items which were salvaged. Whatever can't be salvaged for sale as souvenirs is recycled as scrap metal. Below are a couple pictures of the brass ship bell which I picked up. I have it near my bar and use it during parties to announce "happy hour". |
