Our Family Bali to Lombok Cruise

In late September 2008 Anette, Kimberly and Bill chartered the MSY Ariki II (www.arikicruises.com) for a 5 day cruise out of Bali.  The Ariki II is a 61 foot motor-sail yacht which was originally built in 1948 and has recently been totally refurbished.  The boat is owned and operated by Dave "H" Pallett a friend of Bill's that he originally met while diving with his dive shop in Bali.

On the first leg of the journey we had fairly rough seas and a strong current such that it took us about 13 hours to reach the Gili Islands rather than the expected 8-9 hours. Because of a 3 knot headway current we only achieved about 4-5 knots on the first leg of the journey, however, the remainder of the trip we generally averaged between 6-8 knots.

During the cruise we had the opportunity to assist with the sailing.  In addition Kim and Bill had a chance to scuba dive.  The diving was only average at best but this trip wasn't geared towards diving but rather family-time with plenty of rest and relaxation.

The food onboard was good and hearty (it was actually amazing what can be whipped up in the small galley onboard). On two of the evenings we had beach barbecues which were good fun and very relaxing.

Overall a very good trip that we would like to repeat soon.  The boat is available for private charters throughout Indonesia (although generally its home port is Bali) and is geared towards couples or small families.  It can sleep up to 6 but this would be a little crowded particularly if there was inclement weather.  Charters of up to 7 days are available, although given the boats size 3-4 day cruises are more practical.  Carrying provisions and water for 6 passengers for a 7 day trip would be pressing the boats to its limits.  As an example with only 3 of us onboard we ran out of fresh water (for showering not drinking) on the last evening of the trip.  Nevertheless we would wholeheartedly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to get out and explore parts of Indonesia aboard a motor-sailing yacht.

Our Approximate Route

The below map shows our approximate route.  The first leg of the journey took us about 13 hours, while days 2 and 3 we only sailed about 2-3 hours, day 4 was about a 4 hour sail and the final day was a short 2 hour sail.
