Our 3rd and final port of call was Grand Turk. Grand Turk is the capital of the Turks & Caicos Islands. A small island bursting with turn-of-the-century Caribbean charm; retaining the look and feel of the Caribbean 40 years ago. Grand Turk was founded by Bermudian salt rakers some 3 centuries ago and it's Bermudian-British-Colonial architecture surrounded by the colorful local dwellings make Grand Turk a treasure to visit. Many believe it was here that Christopher Columbus actually made his first landfall in 1492. Grand Turk was also a pirate haven in the 17th and 18th centuries and it was here, in 1962 that American astronaut John Glenn splashed down in his capsule, Friendship 7, after successfully orbiting the Earth. Grand Turk is world famous among snorkelers and scuba divers for its crystal clear waters and the thriving corals and other abundant marine life that adorns a near vertical 7000 foot wall that runs the length of its western coast.
During our Grand Turk stop we spent most of our time at the white-sand beach soaking up the rays and swimming in the blue turquoise waters. While at the beach we sipped cool drinks and listened to the smooth sounds of reggae music from a local musician. Afterwards we all headed over to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville for some snacks and more cool drinks. While the place was kitschy the food was decent enough and there was a huge pool to swim in while we waited for the food to arrive. In addition there was a DJ there who was getting people to play silly games for prizes. Overall Grand Turk was a worthwhile stop.
